 Overview 

This is one of three festival of ship (the others are Kangensai of Itsukushima Shrine (Hiroshima Pref.) and Sumiyoshisai of Sumiyoshi Taisha (Osaka)).

It is nationally disignated asIntangible folk cultural assets.

 



 History 

This festival has 500 years of history.

During Heian peiod (8 - 12 century), people believed that a deceased person who lost at political strife with a grudge occurred disease, thunder, and fire. 
To repose spirit, this ritual was carried out (called Goryoe).

Goryoe also has been carried out to repose Gozutenno (god with bull head) who occurred disease and disaster.

Especially, summer was season when disease spread out. Therefore, people has been carried the ceremony to offer prayers for the safety by showing Guzutenno magnificent festival to feel ease.

 



 Highlight 

The night of the 1st day (Yoiyama) and morning ceremony of the next day is haighlight.

On Yoiyama, 5 big floats (decorated with 400 lanterns like dorm-shaped) parade in river while fire works flower in air.
It is fantastic to see scene of the water front (light of lanterns wavering on the surface of river and floats with lantern parade in the dark night).

On the next morning, lanterns will be taken off and 2-story stairs will be fixed on the floats.
Dolls are displayed on the upper stair and parade again.
It has different taste from the floats of the night. 
At the end of the ceremony, 10 people with long traditional arms dive into the river and swim toward the shrine, then running up to the shrine for pray.
