Ayako Odori has 3 types of dances: "Kouta Odori" performed by women, "Hayashimai" by men, and "Kyogen (comical performance)".
"Kouta Odori" has 11 kinds of dances; 2 - 3 girls wear "Yurai (red cloth)" on their heads, kimono, white tabi, hold fans.
"Hayashimai" is performed by one man and shows mimicry and comical dance. It has 22 kinds of dances.
"Kyogen" is simple dance and reflects feelings of ordinary people. There are 33 kinds of "Kyogen".
It is designated as Intangible cultural assets by the prefecture and as Intangible folk cultural assets by nation.
Ayako Odori has been succeeded for about 500 years in two village: Ukawa and Onadani located 16km southward from Kashiwazaki.
The dances is said keepsake of Ayako (wife of Fusayoshi Uesugi; the feudal load of Echigo who committed suicide due to betrayal of his retainer Tamekage Nagao in 1509).
"Kouta Odori", "Hayashimai","Kyogen" has own particular taste. Simple and sophisticated dance makes a profound impression on us.
The dance shows us feeling and lifestyles of people lived 500 years ago. It is like time warp experience and moves our emotions.
