This is the Shinto ritual to pray for good harvest and good catch of fish.
At 9:00 on the first day (23 Sep.), 10 portable shrines get together at Kashima Jinja (shrine) and the ritual is carried out.
After the ritual, the portable shries are carried to Ohara fishing port to meet other shrines and then, "Shiofumi (the ceremony to pray for good harvest and good catch of fish)" is carried out.
The walk of the portable shrine is said that it shows manly and brave movement reflecting waves of the sea. It is also sait the best performance of carrying portable shrine in Kanto area.
According to the votive picture of a horse drawn in 1864 shows features of the festival.
It means that the festival had already existed at that time.
At "Shiofumi", more than 10 portable shrines dive into the sea water is must-see.
It is exciting and overwheling to see men and the portable shrines splashed by the sea water and men rift the shrines up in air.
After the "Shiofumi", the portable shrine walk through the down town where lanterns are lit up. People sing songs of traditional songs to say goodbye to the portable shrine. It seems to be tasteful and nostrgic scene different from vigorous features of day time "Shiofumi".
