In this festival, the boat (the god's ride) beautifully decorated with colorful flags and lanterns cruise to the sea and the river.
On 24, the boat ship out to the sea and bring sea water and cruise back the Koza River to Kochi Jinja (Shrine where the small island called "Kawanakajima" is enshrined as the god).
People stay and spend night at the river bank called "Yogomori".
On 25, the lion dance is dedicated to the god.
It is nationally designated as Intangible folk cultural assets.
The origin of the festival is said to pray for good harvest of rice.
And other legend said the local military, who join to the Genji clan won in the battle of Genji and Heike clans in late 12the century, came back to this place and thanked to the god.
In Edo period, this area prospered by whale catching. The whale catching boats are beautifully decorated to represent as battle ship (based on the legend) and used in the festival.
Night stay "Yogomori" show different features from day time. It has atmosphere of delicate beauty. The ship cruise around the enshrined island for 3 times in the darkness that only lanterns light float in air and waved on the surface of the water. Listing to the sacred songs in the darkness is misterious, too.
